Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language biographical crime drama film directed by Bhansali and produced by Bhansali and Jayantilal Gada. Alia Bhatt plays the title heroine, with Ajay Devgn, Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Indira Tiwari, Seema Pahwa, and Varun Kapoor all playing important parts.

The film is partially inspired by the actual story of Ganga Jagjivandas Kathiawadi, also known as Gangubai Kothewali, whose life was detailed in S. Hussain Zaidi's book Mafia Queens of Mumbai. The film shows the ascent of a modest girl from Kathiawad who had no choice but to embrace fate and turn it in her favor. Plot

Madhu, a young girl, is pushed into prostitution against her choice. Because she refuses to become a prostitute, brothel madame Rashmibai tortures her. She is later advised to seek Gangubai to convince Madhu. Gangubai meets Madhu and tells her own story.

Ganga Jagjivandas Kathiawadi, the daughter of a barrister, grew up in Kathiawad and dreamed to be a Bollywood actress. She eloped with her beau Ramnik Lal to Mumbai at the age of 16, after Ramnik promised Ganga a film career under the supervision of his aunt Sheela. But her life is turned upside down when he sells her to a brothel managed by Sheela Masi in Kamathipura for Rs 1000, forcing her to begin prostitution.

Later, she changed her name to Gangu. She meets a woman named Kamli while there. Shaukat Abbas Khan pays a visit to the brothel and assaults Gangu. She seeks justice from mafia leader Rahim Lala, who becomes her sworn brother after hearing her appeal. After Sheela Masi dies, Gangu takes over as madame of her brothel, renames herself Gangubai, and goes on to become a strong political figure.

She releases Madhu from the brothel and sends her home safely after listening to her. Gangubai subsequently falls in love with Afsaan Razzaq, a young tailor who also falls in love with her. But she marries him to Roshni, the daughter of a fellow prostitute Kusum, to spare Roshni from prostitution because she cannot marry Afsaan. After all, she is a sex worker. She stands against Razia in the Kamathipura presidential elections and wins by screening movies during Razia's address to distract people. She pushes for women's rights in her new post. Gangubai contacts her family for the first time in 12 years while in office and discovers that her father has died and her mother has not forgiven her for fleeing. Later, Gangubai discovers Following a meeting with Rahim Lala, a Ward secretary intended for everyone in Kamathipura to be removed.

The secretary wants to erect towers in the neighborhood with the help of a school that accuses Kamathipura of immorality. Rahim Lala rejects the secretary's offer and tells Gangubai that he will be sued and taken to court. Gangubai enters a meeting with a journalist and a school principal with the brothel's youngsters. There, she gives five years of tuition to all eight girls, claiming that children from brothels need an education. The girls are enrolled in front of Mr. Faizi, a journalist. On their first day, though, the youngsters are attacked and kicked out of school. Kamli experiences a severe sickness after giving birth and dies at the same moment. Pammi, Kamli's child, is taken in by Gangubai. Mr. Faizi prepares a speech on prostitute education for Gangubai to recite at a demonstration, but she deviates from the script. Instead, she asks the audience why prostitutes are the subject of prejudice since they provide services without discrimination. She also claims that she would fight for the education of prostitutes' children and the respect of prostitutes in society. Gangubai hosts Mr. Faizi and a local lawmaker at her brothel after her speech goes viral. The politician solicits her support and informs her that the school that wants her brothel closed has petitioned the Supreme Court.

Court. Gangubai is planning a visit to New Delhi to meet with Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Gangubai requests that the Prime Minister decriminalise prostitution, but he declines. After some deliberation, the Prime Minister decides to form a committee to look into the problem. He also pledges to keep the brothel and Kamathipura closed. While prostitution is not allowed in Kamathipura, it has survived because to Gangubai Kathiawadi.

Development

The rumour of an adaptation of one of Hussain Zaidi's novel Mafia Queens of Mumbai initially surfaced in June 2017, with Priyanka Chopra attached to play the lead role. [17] Heera Mandi was the film's previous title. [18] Chopra revealed in March 2019 that she was working on a project with Bhansali, who also acknowledged that he was working on Gangubai Kathiawadi with Chopra. [19] However, in September 2019, it was announced that Alia Bhatt, who was meant to star in a separate Bhansali film named Inshallah, would replace Chopra when Inshallah was cancelled. [20] On December 27, 2019, principal photography began in Mumbai's Film City. [22] [23]

Soundtrack

Sanjay Leela Bhansali created the film's music, and A. M. Turaz, Kumaar, and Bhojak Ashok "Anjam" wrote the lyrics. [31] Tarannum Jain, Dipti Rege, Aditi Pradhudesai, Aditi Paul, Kalpana, Ruchna, and Pragti are among the Hindi singers. [32]

Theatrical

Gangubai Kathiawadi premiered at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival on February 16, 2022,[34][35] in the Berlinale Speciale Gala Section. [36] [37] The film was released in theatres on February 25, 2022. [38] The film was originally slated to be released on July 30, 2021, however it was postponed owing to mounting instances and the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. [39] It was originally intended for a global theatrical release on January 6, 2022, but due to a clash with S. S. Rajamouli's RRR, the date has been moved to February 18, 2022. [40] Later, the release date was moved back by a week to February 25th, 2022. [41]

The film was released in Hindi as well as a Telugu-dubbed version.[42]

Box office

Gangubai Kathiawadi grossed 10.50 crore in its first day at the domestic box office. The film grossed 13.32 crore on its second day. The film garnered 15.30 crore on the third day, bringing the total domestic weekend gross to 39.12 crore. [11]

As of 14 April 2022, the film had grossed 153.69 crore in India and 55.56 crore elsewhere, for a total worldwide gross collection of 209.25 crore, allowing it to repay its budget and emerge as a commercial success.
